Blog One: My Workplace: Tuesday Oct 11th
My WLE is called All About Pets it is a Veterinarian clinic and what they do is take care of animals by grooming them, giving them shots that they need, and when they are sick take care of them till they are better. They also have boarding which is similar to day care but its just for pets who's owners need a baby sitter while they are gone. To me All About Pets seems like a medium business because they don't have to many employees and is not a big facility but it is not to small of a space. This medium business is located in Fremont by Alvarado Rd. and it looks like a small business from the outside but when walking into this facility it extends not so large but just the right size. Currently there is 15 employees including my mentor, a lot of the employees are mainly vat assistants but there is also vet. doctors and the manager. Most of the employees here have a 2 year college degree and most others have technical certificates. All About Pets serve cats, dogs, birds, and small exotic pets. One strength that I mostly see in my workplace is there communication skills and group skills. I cant really think of any weaknesses that my workplace has because they are a very together comunity.
Blog Two: My Mentor: Tuesday Oct 18th
Jennifer Perry is the greatest mentor I can ask for she is very pationet about her job, as being a manager. She not only does the big things like managing the workplace, and working with both employees and customers but the small ones to. For example helping out in cleaning by doing the laundry or sweaping eventhough she doesent have to. Her typical week sometimes has to do with going to long meetings or keeping paper work organiozed and filed. Not only is Jennifer play the role of my mentor but many of the workers also do to like Alvin, Dawn, Leticia, Ashley, Kelly and Jesse mainly they take the mentor role when Jennifer is of in a metting. They teach me many things I will have to have knowledge in the future for example how to look for a vain or get temperatures. There typical day is cleaning, assisting with the animals, and keep all paper work organized that is used to keep track of the animals. Jennifer became interested in this field because she liked animals and to her the best way was to become a manager at a vet clinic. To become a manager she went to a 4 year college.
Blog Three: My Role: Tuesday Oct 25th
My title is an intern assistant. My main responsibility is to assist any of the vet assistants, doctors and to help keep clean and organized the facility. For example when all the personal is busy running around doing there job I will go to the laundry room and do any laundry that needs to be done and fold and put away laundry that is done so that it is there when needed by techs and doctors. Also when techs need assistant in taken temperatures or need a weight on a patient I would go and get there temp and weight so the information is ready for when the doctor see's the patient. I not also help the personal but the animals by keeping there kenels clean and ready to go so when they come in to board or hospitalize. Other task I complete each week is checking that all the house cats have food in there bowl so when they get hungry and check if the techs and doctors supplies are full so when they need them they are there and they dont have to run around looking for them. A regular day for me is comming in saying good morning to everyone look inside the house cats kennels to see if they have food and if they dont I fill there bowl after I go to the laundry room I see what needs to be washed, folded and put away. After that I see if we have any boards that I can walk if we do then I walk them if we dont I move on to the next thing. The next thing is always anything given to me by my main mentor or one of the other mentors. It can be cleaning shelves, windows, assisting, restocking, taking temps, weight, paper organization, or somtimes little projects like today one of my mentors gave me a project of making cheat sheets for the techs so they know what kind of vaccines are needed for puppy, dogs, kittys, and cats.
Blog Four: Project Proposal: Tuesday Nov 1st
My Idea for my WLE project was to make a website connected to a flyer or poster put around the community to bring more business. I came up with this idea when my main mentor was telling me how she wanted to get more business so after hearing that I started thinking that many people use the internet a lot so creating a website comparing ALl About Pets with other clinics and showing how All About Pets is the best choice would bring more business. I am excited to do this project because I will be given back to my workplace instead of just taking from it and especially because everyone at my workplace have been so nice and welcoming. My plan is to check in with my mentor to see what I can share with the public and what I cant then make a check sheet on what I would need to do to complete my project before the due date.
Blog Five: Progress on my WLE Project, part 1: Tuesday Nov 8th
Today at my WLE since it was a slow business day I shredded paper, did laundry, organized all of the pet blankets and pet beds, and also organized all the medication in the pharmacy. I also had a sit down with my mentor and advisor and talked a little about my project and we came to an agreement of my project being for me to pick up their original website and making it more professional and presenting my project on december 6th. I currently have not started on my project but will next tuesday with help from my mentor.
Blog Six: Leadership Skills: Nov. 15th
At my internship I use all leadership skills to be successful but the leadership skill I use the most is completing projects effectively. I use this skill to complete all task given to me to complete and to make sure I complete all successfully. What I do is make a outline off all task and put them in order by importance and give each task an appropriate amount of time to complete so I can get to all of the tasks. I know I am using this leadership skill effectively because I complete all tasks given to me each Tuesday. One way I can improve in this leadership skill maybe is to make it so I can have extra time at the end of all my tasks just in case I get an extra task. This leadership skill helps me complete all of my work because it keeps me organized. I believe my mentor also uses the same leadership skill because she has many tasks each day and to make sure she completes all, especially the more important ones she has to make a check list to have everything organized and to make sure she doesn't forget any, because when managing a business everything must be done successfully even the smallest tasks.
Blog Seven: What I Learned, Reflection: Nov. 22nd
My WLE help me realized how much of a big interested I have in the career of veterinarian and it gave me a big push to pursue my career choice of becoming a veterinarian. My only challenge at my WLE was that I did not know anything and I couldn't just jump in and it pushed me back but after putting my shyness behind I started asking questions and the techs never minded they actually liked teaching about what they do. All techs showed me so much and now I feel more prepared and ready when they ask me for assistance. The creativity I believe is used when trying to attract customers which is where I am going to get involved in for my WLE project. What I believe now that I didn't before about this profession is that it takes a lot of practice and school to become a great veterinarian. An important skill that I used and that is very important in this profession is communication because when working in this profession you must always work with others which is why communication is very important. Being at my WLE I learned that that it is better to ask how to do things if I truly don't know or understand because its better to learn by asking than by learning from the mistakes because sometimes those mistakes effect others.
Blog Eight: Professionalism: Nov.29
In order for me to find my WLE I looked up all possible clinics around where I lived I found many but didn't have much luck until I found VCA All About Pets an got on the phone with mentor Jennifer Perry and explained to her how interested I am in the field and how I would love the opportunity to be able to intern there. After having an ok from my mentor we meet the same day it was some what of an interview I had to got through which for me was a lot of fun because there was many laughs. So to get hired I gave her my cover letter my resume and I went for an interview. Not only where these things important to do but also the way I presented my self I did not go to fancy or over the top but I also didn't go in my regular or school cloths I went looking professional for my age. As a result of my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means to be very responsible for your own actions and work also to be on time and be able to communicate and get along with your co-workers and keep organized.
Blog Nine: Life At My WLE: Nov 6th
I presented my WLE project today and practiced most of the time with my co-intern and I also finished all of my responsibilities. I improved strongly as an intern because I am more responsible now than I was before and I am more involved now. Last year as an intern I did not do much because I felt like it was not necessary because I did not take it seriously and that caused me to be less involved compare to this year. I have also grown up and noticed that everything that has to do with school and work is very important regardless of the amount of weight of responsibilities. What makes my workplace great are the employees because they are very welcoming and polite also because I get to work with animals which is my passion.
Blog Ten: The End: Nov 13th
My final thoughts of my WLE is that I am grateful I was given this chance because it has helped me a lot in growing up and helping me see my future. I really wish I did not have to leave my WLE because I loved it so much but because of that I am going to still be involved. I have talked with my mentor about it and she said she would love that so I am going to try my best to stay involved and find time to set aside just for them. As I said this experience has helped me a lot and it has opened new doors for me that I never knew where there and it has pushed me forward to my career choice of becoming a veterinarian.
